Payday Super: How the Maximum Contribution Base is changing

How is the Maximum Contribution Base changing under payday super?

It's moving from a quarterly to an annual calculation, and it's expected to be set at $250,000 for FY27.

The Maximum Contribution Base (MCB) is the earnings threshold above which you're not required to pay super guarantee. Under the current system, it's calculated per quarter. Under payday super, it shifts to an annual figure.

For most businesses, this won't change day-to-day payroll significantly. But for employees with higher salaries or variable earnings, particularly those who earn unevenly across the year, the switch to an annual MCB can affect how much super you're obligated to contribute at different points in the year.

If you have employees who are close to or above the MCB, it's worth reviewing how your payroll system will handle the annual calculation versus the quarterly one. Your payroll provider should be updating their software to manage this automatically, but it's worth confirming.
